A PRIVATE INSTITUTION

A history written by archives, judgment and responsibility

The history of Blue Lion begins with those family matters that cannot be disclosed and cannot go wrong: debts, cash flow, inheritance, collateral, family reputation and long-term control. It is not built around a certain financial product, but gradually forms its own system and discipline in the complex situations of generations of clients.

BLUE LION PRINCIPLE

The number one goal of family wealth is to avoid selling your best assets at the worst possible time.

In 1826, Thomas Ashcombe accepted a commission to restructure the debts of an aristocratic family in Northern England. The family owns estates, London mansions, artworks and overseas debt, but short-term bills are approaching maturity. Ashcombe named this internal document after the blue leaping lion in the family coat of arms. The Blue Lion File

He did not advise his clients to sell the ancestral home hastily, but to reorganize assets and liabilities, distinguishing between assets that can be disposed of, those that can be pledged, and those that involve family reputation and inheritance order. Extending notes, selling non-core forest land, pledging rental income and rewriting inheritance arrangements constituted Blue Lion's earliest working methods.

Industrialization, railway construction, insurance systems and capital markets have rapidly expanded, and traditional land wealth has begun to face new cash flow and inheritance pressures. Ashcombe's private accounting rooms gradually Ashcombe & Co., Estate Accountants form of operation.

The family ledger is more than just an accounting book. It combines assets, liabilities, rents, debt due dates, heirs, marital arrangements, trustees and potential disputes into one continuously updated record.

The assets table shows what the family owns; the succession table shows whether the family can continue to exist.

Victoria Expansion and the First Crisis

The Argentine Lesson

Victorian Railway Debt and Shipping Notes

After London became a global capital center, British funds flowed into railways, mining, shipping and overseas government debt. The predecessor of Blue Lion became the invisible interface for private families to enter the global market.

The market contraction around 1890 caused some overseas debt prices to fall sharply. This time it is called internally The Argentine Lesson The incident made Blue Lion face the gap between liquidity risk and client tolerance for the first time.

Blue Lion Office takes shape

In 1896, the Blue Lion Office officially entered the institution's name. The initial single file code gradually became the identification of a special group of private client relationships, and also marked the transition of Blue Lion from a private accounting room to a private client office with an independent tradition.

The First World War brought about the simultaneous emergence of succession, widow's rights, protection of minor beneficiaries and pressure to sell the estate. The Centralized Succession Crisis of 1916, known internally as The Heirship Winter

Continuity Under Pressure

After 1924, Blue Lion more systematically coordinated trusts, estates, beneficiary protection, family committees, lawyers, private banking and cross-border asset arrangements. It not only focuses on the value of assets, but also focuses on whether the assets can be passed on to the next generation in an established order.

The migration case of European industrial families in 1938 left a complex record of actions, hesitations, risk boundaries and family fates. After the war, Sir Alistair Harrowby further established formal Red File System

Death, disability, marital changes, major litigation, asset freezing, interruption of banking relationships, disputes over corporate control and political risks have since been included in every important client's plan.

CHAPTER VI1957—1979

The direct line between Britain and Hong Kong after the war

Hong Kong Connected Family

After the post-war British high tax rate, foreign exchange controls, inheritance tax and rising estate maintenance costs, Blue Lion began to contact wealthy families outside the UK. In 1957, it made its first systematic contact with Hong Kong-related shipping and trading families through private banks in London.

Hong Kong was not a public place of business at the time but was an important connecting node in client files. Created by Margaret Vale Hong Kong Connected Family Classify and track Hong Kong-related assets, banking relationships, ship interests, education and common law documents.

Private Office Reform

Charles Ainsworth pushed Blue Lion to establish an investment committee, an asset allocation framework, a whitelist of external managers, a family governance group, a family charter and an annual balance sheet review.

Blue Lion can understand investments, supervise investments, design investment committees and screen external managers; but it does not raise funds publicly, does not sell financial products, and does not use income rankings as the basis of its brand.

Family offices must understand investment, but their responsibilities are higher than investment.
CHAPTER VIII2001—2018

LLP and Transparency Era

Explainable Risk

After 2001, Blue Lion was restructured into Blue Lion Family Office LLP, and its service framework shifted to family governance, investment supervision, external manager selection, private banking coordination, trust and tax advisory coordination, and red file management.

Before and after the 2008 financial crisis, the risk control faction represented by Julian Vale demanded reducing exposure to structured credit and highly leveraged products. Subsequent tax transparency, CRS, FATCA and anti-money laundering reviews have made the source of funds, ultimate beneficiaries and cross-border structure explainability new core disciplines.

THE EIGHTH PRINCIPLE

Only risks that can be explained can be taken.

Asia Strategy and Hong Kong Reassessment

Asia’s first generation of entrepreneurs is gradually entering the wealth inheritance cycle. Compared with the old wealth in Europe, the new wealth in Asia faces more rapid asset growth, complex corporate structures, dispersed identity arrangements, lack of family governance and cross-border regulatory uncertainty.

In 2023, Blue Lion re-evaluated the feasibility of Hong Kong as a front office in Asia and contacted DWTB HOLDINGS LIMITED founded by Ms. Ko Meien. Local long-term service records, company documents, equity changes and actual control links have become the factual basis for the establishment of the Hong Kong platform.

Asia’s new wealth does not lack assets, but structures that can be inherited, explained and exist across borders.

THE FOURTH TRANSFORMATION
